New Book by Our Academics on Ottoman–Montenegro Relations Published

The new study by Doğuş University Turkish Language and Revolution History Unit faculty members Dr. Ali Gökçen Özdem and Dr. Hakan Kaya, titled “İngiliz Arşiv Belgelerinde Osmanlı–Karadağ İlişkileri” (Ottoman–Montenegro Relations in British Archival Documents) (1857–1859) and based on diplomatic correspondence contained in the UK National Archives file FO 421-11 Correspondence Relative to Montenegro, January 1857–January 1859, has been published.

The book was edited by Prof. Dr. İbrahim YILMAZÇELİK, faculty member in Modern History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Fırat University. It addresses a significant phase of the rising independence movements in the Balkans during the final century of the Ottoman Empire, while comprehensively presenting Montenegro's path to independence and its position within international diplomacy in the light of archival documents.

This study is particularly significant as it brings into Turkish for the first time the official correspondence conducted among the diplomatic missions of the British Foreign Office in the region. The systematic analysis of these documents provides a more holistic understanding of the historical background of Ottoman–Montenegro relations and also to reinterpret of the international power dynamics of the period.

On this occasion, we thank Doğuş University for its support throughout the preparation of this work. We hope that the book will open new horizons for all researchers in the fields of Ottoman diplomatic history, Balkan studies, and archival research, and will contribute to the academic literature.
