Goal 5 : Gender Equality

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Goal 5 – Gender Equality calls for women and girls everywhere to have equal rights and opportunities, and to live free of discrimination and violence. Doğuş University actively promotes gender equality through its policies, research, and campus culture.

  • Women’s Studies Research Center: Doğuş established the Women’s Studies Application and Research Center in 2019 to advance gender equality initiatives. The center conducts research on women’s issues and organizes academic and social activities to raise awareness of gender equality and prevent harassment. Its mandate includes supporting research on women’s economic, social, and political participation and developing strategies to ensure a campus free of gender-based violence. For example, the center hosts panels and seminars on topics like women in STEM, work-life balance, and combating domestic violence.

  • Inclusive Policies: Institutionally, Doğuş University enforces a strict non-discrimination and zero tolerance for harassment policy, aligned with SDG 5’s aims. The university’s Code of Ethics and disciplinary regulations ensure equal treatment of all genders in recruitment, admissions, and daily campus life. Female representation in faculty and administration is encouraged; many leadership roles at Doğuş are held by women, exemplifying empowerment in practice.

  • Student Engagement: Student clubs at DOU also champion gender equality. The Hürriyet ve Adalet Kulübü (Liberty and Justice Club) and others frequently organize conferences on women’s rights, legal equality, and feminist movements. Every year on International Women’s Day, events and exhibitions on campus celebrate women’s achievements and highlight ongoing gender disparities, educating the community about Goal 5.

  • Research and Projects Highlights:

    • Through collaborations with both global and local partners, Doğuş University amplifies its impact on gender equality beyond the campus. In partnership with UNDP (2023), the university is developing an academic Gender Equality Certificate Program—an applied research initiative designed to educate stakeholders in inclusive practices. While not a traditional journal publication, the program represents a meaningful translation of gender research into community-based training. Complementing this, DOU students have actively volunteered with women’s shelters and NGOs, providing direct support and fundraising for women and girls. These efforts reflect the university’s commitment to Goal 5, leveraging both international collaboration and civic engagement to promote gender equality in education and society.
